The Lavender Orpington is a large, gentle heritage breed admired for its soft
lavender-gray plumage and signature fluffy appearance. Often described as
looking like a “feathered cloud,” these birds are known for their calm, friendly
temperament and make excellent pets for families, beginners, and backyard
flocks.
Originally developed from the Orpington breed created in England by William
Cook, the lavender variety became more established through selective breeding
in the 1990s. Lavender Orpingtons are reliable layers of light brown eggs, and
hens may occasionally go broody and make attentive mothers.
Their dense feathering makes them especially cold-hardy, though they
appreciate extra shade and fresh water during hot summer weather. With their
sweet personalities, striking color, and dependable nature, Lavender Orpingtons
are a favorite among backyard chicken keepers.
