Ayam Cemani Chickens
The Ayam Cemani is a rare and exotic chicken breed originating from Indonesia,
prized for its striking all-black appearance and unique genetics. Due to a
condition called fibromelanosis, nearly every part of the bird — including the
feathers, skin, comb, beak, and even internal organs — displays deep black
pigmentation.
Known for their calm and manageable temperament, Ayam Cemanis get along well with other
flock members and are rarely considered aggressive or bullying birds. While somewhat cautious
at first, they often become confident and trusting with regular gentle handling. Roosters are
especially known for being calm, friendly toward people, and protective of their flock.
Despite their tropical origins, Ayam Cemanis are surprisingly cold-hardy when provided with a
dry, draft-free coop. Their black feathers naturally absorb heat, helping them stay comfortable in
cooler temperatures, though extra care should be taken to protect their combs during severe
winter weather.
Highly sought after by poultry enthusiasts and collectors, the Ayam Cemani is valued more for
its rarity, beauty, and ornamental appeal than for production.
